I am a dedicated music educator and performing violist with over 20 years of experience teaching violin, viola, and music theory to students of all ages and skill levels. My teaching style blends high-level technical instruction with creativity, musical exploration, and a deep commitment to each student’s growth and well-being. I hold a Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Oberlin Conservatory, as well as a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory. My approach is shaped by this dual background in music and psychology, allowing me to support not only technical development but also the mental and emotional well-being of my students. I currently teach Music Theory at Portland Youth Philharmonic and beginning violin at the Metropolitan Youth Symphony. In addition to my teaching work, I serve as Assistant Principal Violist with Symphony Tacoma and am a core member of the Sarasota Opera Orchestra. My performance experience includes classical, jazz, folk, and world music, with appearances across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Taiwan. My lessons are structured yet flexible, combining traditional string pedagogy, ear training, music theory, and creative exercises tailored to each individual. I emphasize efficient practice techniques, strong foundational skills, and joyful music-making. With younger students, I draw on my training in developmental psychology to create a nurturing, engaging learning environment. Above all, I believe music is a powerful tool for personal expression, connection, and growth. My goal is to inspire students to find their unique musical voice and to enjoy the process every step of the way.
