I am a trumpet player with orchestral experience in Munich and the Netherlands, having studied with Prof. Theo Wolters (Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra). I founded the Klezmer Ensemble Orchestra in Munich and teach at the Hamburg Academy for Music and Culture. I have also taught in Flensburg, Eschborn, and Vorarlberg. I work across classical, blues, pop, film, musicals, klezmer, and folk. As a conductor and music director, I have led brass bands in Germany, the UK, and Denmark, focusing on individual student growth and musical passion.

Previously, Dr. Whimple served as an Instructor and Graduate Teaching Assistant at The University of Alabama. Prior to his doctoral studies, Stephen attended the Juilliard School as an Irene Diamond Graduate Fellow, Music Advancement Program Teaching Fellow, and Morse Teaching Artist Fellow. He completed his bachelor’s degree at The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam.

As one of the first teachers of Virtu.Academy, he has strategies to help all ages and skill levels. He received his B.M. from the Oberlin Conservatory and his M.M. from the San Francisco Conservatory. With the Community Music Center of Boston he developed programs for schools across the city focused on a love of music and the simple fundamentals of brass playing.

He started on clarinet at 11, switched to sax, and studied with Darryl Barber and Ellis Marsalis. Based in New Orleans since 1997, Winther has toured internationally and released several albums. His latest, Refuge In Sound, received critical acclaim for its soulful sound and original compositions. He’s also collaborated with top New Orleans jazz artists.
